My cousin, Joan, has the most incredible collection of
S&P shakers! She started collecting in her
early 20's and I'm not exaggerating when I say she
probably has 100 sets. One of the qualities I love most
about her is her quirkiness and keen sense of humor.
Believe me...this is no ordinary S&P Collection!
On my last visit to her home I was drooling over the sets
when the idea hit to paint them. She kindly allowed me to
bring home as many as I wanted. Thought I'd start out
slow with a dozen! I don't know if I'll find the magic in all
of them, but I certainly loved painting the little Elephants.
They are by far my very favorites!

You're back! Missed you Gwen! Hope the holidays are finding you in (better) health. The elephants are quirky and charming. Very nicely painted ; ) Look forward to seeing more of her collection. Merry Christmas!
Welcome back! You've really been missed!!
What a great subject. I like that they have that shiney, glossy look. It's going to be fun to see what you do with the other S&P shakers!
Merry Christmas!
Hi Gwen,
I have missed seeing your posts and paintings and am glad to see you back. And, with another wonderful painting. Fun colors and highlights on the elephants. Wonderful detail. Just love it. Take care!
What a fun idea! Theses two are mighty cute.
We have all missed your posting. Merry Christmas!
There's no doubt these beasties are high gloss ceramics. You caught the shine to perfection.
I can see why they're your favorites. They're real charmers from trunk to tail.
You did a wonderful painting of these. I'm not a collector of S&P's myself but I can't help admiring them in antique shops.
Can't wait to see the next pair :)
Merry Christmas Gwen. I love your work.
I love it! This looks like it was fun to paint. I think you're on to a great series. Happy holidays! :)
These are adorable! You've captured their little personalities perfectly. Wonderful sheen on the ceramic, and their outfits match your tablecloth perfectly!
Gwen, Hope you are feeling better and glad to see you are over the "painting burn out".
This one is too cute! Love the glossy little elephants.
Happy to have a Gwen painting in my inbox. Welcome back. Great idea for a series, love the elephants.
My grandmother had a collection too. When she passed I took several sets. I never thought of painting them, but it's a good idea... These elephants are so fun.
Merry Christmas.
I'm glad to see you back, and with such a charmer!!!! Love these little elephants.
Welcome back Gwen! Cute little S&Ps. Your choice of circle patterned fabric reminds me of the circus rings... just perfect for elephants!

Gwen, I love it that you're inspired by salt and pepper shakers - the muse can appear in any form can't it? I'm always so encouraged to hear other artist experience plateaus whether it's an internal block or external circumstances that demand their time. I just started again after an entire summer of absence. I love your little shimmery elephants - and am looking forward to the rest of your series!
You found the magic in this set!
This painting and the salt and pepper shakers are SO Fantastic!!!! I love it. Another great idea from the studio of Gwen Bell. My uncle collected them, and I would sit for hours admiring them and now if I had the inclination to collect something, that would be it.
You have captured that old style shininess so well. Just great!
Back in full force - love this Gwen! You are so good at getting the sense of the subject matter; I feel as though I can reach in and pick these up out of your painting. Beautiful!
You are back YEH!
What a great group this gonna be.
Love #1 with the elephants.
What a fun series...Can't wait to see more salt and pepper shakers!
Yay Gwen, glad to see you back and with such a winner straight out of the gate!!
wonderful salt and pepper shakers they look so real, love the shine on them. Glad to see you are feeling better, hope you have a wonderful Christmas!
gwen, you little minx! i love your salt and pepper shakers!!!!!!!!!!!
Start out slow. It is good to know your limits. This is a great start. Looking for the next 11.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas!
I've never commented on your site, but enjoy your art. I couldn't resist commenting seeing these guys.
Very well done. Elsie has a collection of elephants, so I have a fondness for them. And you did these so well. You feel like you're there!
Was in Thermopolis, Wyoming the other day and browsing through several Antique tores there looking at tons of things wondering how an artist such as yourself would use what I was looking at in their work. This is how. great job Gwen. Will be fun to see what else you are working up with in the shaker world.
Delightful!!
