Here's Pepper, a beautiful Black Lab. He is the first of
four Pet Portrait Commissions I'm working on. I always
find black dogs to be a real challenge to paint, but that's
part of the fun too. Pepper's smiling expression made this
a delightful experience!
Here's a little background on Pepper: He is a Country Dog
who never meets a stranger. He loves his ears, chin and
back scratched - and belly too. He loves to sit in chairs
(he barely fits) and watch what's going by outside. He
lives in Canada with a Mom who loves him very much!

He's totally gorgeous Gwen!
I discovered, through this blogging world, that the best colours to use for a black dog are cad red and Prussian blue, highlights in AS lilac. Can't remember who told me, but it certainly worked!
wow very nice!
Fantastic! I love Pepper's nose! I think you did great with the black fur. The blues show a shiny coat. She's beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing your other dog paintings!
Awww, this looks like my husbands dog, Pepper (a black lab) that he had when he was a teenage. Thanks for the memories. It's beautiful!
Wow Gwen, series of 4???
Your friend from Cali is very happy and proud for you.
Pepper is so beautiful, you did a great job.
Pepper reminds me of the black lab I had as pet for 15 years, when I was a child. He was a wonderful dog and like your cute portrait, he always seemed to be smiling... just happy to be with his owners doing whatever they wanted him to do.
Nice work Gwen.

WOW Gwen.What a change.
Pepper is so beautiful. No, he is
gorgeous!
I am happy and proud for you,3 more to come and I cannot wait.
You have painted Pepper beautifully, I love a smiling dog! You are exactly right, black fur is the hardest, very much a challenge, but when successful, as you are here, you learn so much. I can't wait to see the other portraits, hopefully you'll have some other fur colors to play with.
Hi Gwen,
I love this painting. Super doggie.
I just want to take him home.
Woops nope. Two cats and a dog. Can't do it.

Pepper is perfect!! So much character, so well done! I too have problems with black dogs. I've tried adding colors one would not expect to see and I've tried just black with white paint. This works perfectly.
Pepper looks wonderful. I am sure your clients are so thrilled.
I agree black dogs are always hard to do. You have done a great job Gwen.
I have missed a couple of your recent works. and I love them. The Teas Stacks is just WOW
The blue Vase is lovely.

"Pepper" is terrific. I can really feel that sleek hair above the eyes. But I really wanted to tell you how much I loved your vineyard painting on DPO! Wow! Vineyards are not an easy thing to paint (I've tried!) and yours is delightful! So colourful and such nice structure.
He looks full of life........and like quite a handful.
beautiful! you have sooo captured the spirit and happy joy of a Lab.
