"Green Shell"

6 x 6 oil on canvas panel SOLD

This is one of my favorite souvenirs. My sister brought
it back to me from one of her trips to Hawaii. It must

truly be Paradise to able to find these little jewels right
on the beach
! I have had it for years and have always
wanted to
paint it.

However, it is
tiny...a little over an inch...so that always
seemed to be too challenging.
And it was! I still don't feel
like I really captured it's
beauty. In life, the pearl areas
gleam with purples, pinks,
yellows, greens and blues.
Just gorgeous! Tried as I
might, I could not replicate it.

My style used to be very tight and realistic and I have
worked hard over the past year and a half to loosen up,
but this subject seemed to call for a tighter technique.

Gwen, just love the luminosity in this one..and the green is so great. I can see this little gem hanging in someones beach house. Well done.

Gwen, you DID capture the beauty of the shell! It jumped out at me when I saw it on DPO. I actually let out an "Ahhh!" That opalescence is gorgeous!

Gwen, in my opinion you did indeed capture the luminosity and color in the pearly part of the shell. This is gorgeous. It caught my eye right away when I opened up the DPO page this morning!

Awesome glossy reflection,
& tortoisey-green texture too!
If it was a struggle, it doesn't show.
I bet you'll appreciate it better in time.

Gwen!

Green is my most favorite color so you know I'm going to love this one!

The greens mixed with the glossy pearl whites are just lovely!

Now I want one of those shells....or a dozen!

This is absolutely lovely and the pearl areas just glisten. I think you did an amazing job. I think you must keep this painting. They would go so well together in a display. Sometimes I feel that I may go back to tight and realistic and stop fighting with all this loose stuff. (Just joking, sort of...)

Love this little painting, I think you did a great job, I know what you mean about capturing the colours of mother of pearl, I tried painting 3 spoons made of that and failed miserably to capture their iredescense.

I don't know what happened to my comment - I'll say it again, the way you captured the surface of the shell is simply amazing.
